The fire resistance of the buildings is one of the strategies to be pursued to guarantee an adequate level of safety of buildings under fire conditions. The fire resistance represents the time (minutes) during which the construction element exposed to a fire preserves the structural stability (R), the sealing (E) and the thermal insulation (I).
The reaction to fire of a material regards its degree of participation in the development and propagation of fire to which it is subjected. The materials are classified according to the European standard EN 13501-1 in Euroclasses (A1, A2, B ... F): A1 ones are non-combustible while the materials certified A2, B, C, D, E, F burn in ascending order.
The reaction to fire of the materials is particularly influential on the fire risk of the perimeter walls and roofs in relation to a fire outside the building.
